The Adena Northeast Expansion project at 272 Hospital Road, Chillicothe, OH, was completed in April 2010; TP Mechanical installed the plumbing, HVAC and fire protection systems and provided coordination services.
The project’s original contract value was $7,010,142, and had a final contract value of $7,168,000, due to owner additions and changes. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by January 2010; the actual completion date was April 2010.
The TP Mechanical team brought several innovative approaches to the project. Floor penetration layouts were performed using a Trimble Robotic Total Station, which triangulates measurements using known points inside the building. This allowed us to lay out floor sleeves and drains using the 3D coordination models that were created during the coordination process. The Trimble files were created by our CAD Department and emailed to the Trimble unit onsite. Once the files were loaded onto the unit, it was possible to lay out hundreds of penetrations in one day with more accuracy than traditional methods – using strings and tape measures.
We also coordinated the medical gas headwalls and outlets in the existing units in the hospital and helped provide the layout. TP Mechanical utilized our fabrication shop to prefabricate bathroom groups and elements in the mechanical room, constructing them in a clean and safe environment. Prefabrication allowed us to save installation costs for the construction manager by reducing the time required in the field for assembly. As part of this hospital expansion, new chillers will be installed in the future to service the majority of the hospital. We helped to locate all of the existing pipes and coordinated tie ins. When the hospital was ready for the new chillers to feed parts of the existing units, the installation required only opening valves to the new system and isolating the old valves.
