April 15, 2014 will be our Annual Blood Drive – Help us save lives!
We started having blood drives in honor of Ed Hagins, TP Mechanical’s former insurance broker and bonding agent who passed away in December 2009, from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Ed lived cancer free for ten years after receiving a year of radiation, chemotherapy, and autologous stem cell transplantation. In April 2009, after a routine annual examination it was determined that he needed another stem cell transplant; this time it had to be an allogeneic transplant from an outside donor. As it worked out his sister, Mary Katherine tested to be a match and Ed had the transplant in July, 2009. After his transplant and until his death in December, 2009, Ed had blood transfusions every week at the bone marrow transplant unit at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood.
Giving blood is a simple process that is safe and only takes a total of 35-45 minutes, but only 5% of the population donates. About one in seven people who enter the hospital will need blood or blood components. You may not have benefitted directly from a blood donor, but chances are someone you know has or will. It may be someone you love, a coworker, or a neighbor. The blood you donate is used in your community, so the lives we are saving are the faces we see every day.
We are trying to make the process as easy as possible. There will be a mobile unit at the Columbus office.
