Design Engineer

Job Description

The design engineer plans, directs, and controls all engineering operations to achieve company goals and objectives.  Assists teams to resolve problems, identify solutions, and provide recommendations, permit plans, and construction documents.  Represents the company as prime internal and external contact on areas of responsibility.

Responsibilities for this position also include:

  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations, heat transfer, fluids analysis, pressure calculations, and equipment selections as related to Design Build and Design Assist projects.
  • Apply knowledge of standards, codes, regulations, and industry best practices to designs.
  • Creation of code-compliant bid/construction/permit documents for Design Build projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications (HVAC and plumbing)
  • Systems evaluations, analysis and reporting, including energy analysis and life cycle cost analysis.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
  • Recommends design modifications for Design Assist and Value Engineered projects. Responsible for HVAC and Plumbing equipment selection and design.
  • Support development of standards, procedures and policies.
  • Increase effectiveness of products and services through value enhancement, system optimization, and other technical strategies.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects to meet project milestones and deliverables with assigned sales, estimating, and project management personnel delivering and supporting quality products on time and within budget.
  • Develop, create, and maintain client relationships with clients (construction managers, general contractors, owners, etc.) with intent for Design Build, Design Assist and Value Engineering work.
  • Work with clients, owners, and other design professionals to insure project scope, requirements, and budgetary parameters and desired outcomes are accurately reflected in proposals and design documentation.
  • Lead a collaborative team of contracted engineers through the design of large scale projects and work independently on smaller projects as assigned.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Experience/Qualifications Required

  • Minimum 5 years of Design experience.
  • 2 or more years’ experience in plumbing, hydronics and mechanicals.

Job Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Knowledge of mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference as well as ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages and ratios to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
  • Interpret extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent is preferred.
